Day one

Your holiday begins with an overnight flight to Osaka.

Day two

Arrive at Osaka's Kansai airport, meet your tour manager and transfer to Kyoto for a three night stay. In Japan's former imperial capital, the modern world never quite overcomes the traditions of a past reflected in grand palaces, exquisite gardens and ornate temples and shrines. With over 2000 individual monuments and no less than 17 World Heritage sites, Kyoto is justifiably regarded as Japan's cultural capital.

Day three

Today your guide will introduce you to Kyoto's treasures. UNESCO-listed Nijo castle, a 17th century stronghold of the first Tokugawa shogun, is an ornamental design surrounded by gardens. You'll also see the Kinkaku-ji 'Golden Pavilion', the 'dry-landscape' Zen Buddhist garden of Ryoan-ji and the noisy and colourful Nishiki market. The evening is free, perhaps to wander the ancient streets of the Gion district, where you still might catch sight of geishas hurrying along.

Day four

Make the short journey by coach to Nara, Japan's original sixth century capital, where sights include the 1560-ft-high Great Buddha at the Todai-ji temple, the sacred deer of the Nara-koen park, and Kasuga, one of Japan's most important Shinto shrines.Returning to Kyoto, you'll visit the Kiyomizu-dera temple - amongst Japan's finest - offering views of the whole city. You'll also have the opportunity to stroll two restored streets of Ninen-saka and Sannen-saka, and will experience a traditional tea ceremony for a taste of an ancient ritual.

Day five

Take the drive into Central Honshu, heading for the city of Kanazawa, where you'll spend one night. Here you'll find the Kenroku-en garden, one of the world's greatest horticultural treasures, and, transporting you back across the centuries, the Samurai house at Nagamachi and the Higashi Chaya-Gai geisha district.

Day six

Another day is spent discovering Japan's traditions as you head south. At the UNESCO-listed Ogimachi village of Shirikawa-go, several thatched gasso-zukuri farmhouses - built to withstand the snows of winter - are preserved. You'll visit the Wada house, built by one of the region's wealthiest families. You'll continue to overnight in Takayama, a laid-back gateway to the Japanese Alps, its preserved Sanmachi-Suji area lined with traditional streets and sake breweries and the ornate festival floats of Yatai Kaikan.

Day seven

Today, after the opportunity to take in Takayama's morning market, you'll journey towards the Japanese Alps, to the city of Matsumoto - where the country's oldest wooden castle, its black and white turreted keep and its moat full of carp and gliding swans, can be seen. This afternoon you'll continue your scenic journey, driving through the Owakudani valley, with its sulphurous hot springs. You'll stay overnight in the Hakone national park.

Day eight

Spend a morning in Hakone, dominated by snow-capped Mt Fuji on a clear day. Hope for a view of the peak from Lake Ashi's shores, and visit to the Hakone open air museum, which boasts one of the world's largest collections of Henry Moore sculptures and over 300 works by Picasso. Later this afternoon, you'll board a famous Shinkansen 'bullet train' for the remarkably short journey from Odawara station into Tokyo. Upon arrival, you'll transfer to your hotel and will have the opportunity to soak up the electric atmosphere of a first evening in the capital.

Day nine

Join your guide for a day's exploration, including the ancient Buddhist Asakusa temple, the Nakamise shopping street, Ueno's arcaded market and the electronic world of Akihabara. See Ginza - Tokyo's 'Fifth Avenue' - and the man-made 'island' of Odaiba, with its views of Tokyo bay. Your guide will be on hand to help you orientate yourself and give suggestions for your final evening in the city.

Day 10

A last morning's sightseeing brings the chance to sample the Tokyo subway in the company of your guide, as you head to the tree-lined avenues of the Meiji park and shrine - Tokyo's forested 'oasis'. Then, join the thousands waiting for the green man at the world-famous Shibuya Crossing. Later, transfer back to Narita airport, to board the return overnight flight.

Day 11

Arrive back in the UK in the morning.
