Metz - 'Playing with Fire'
Now home of the International Glass Centre, the whole region is famed for both its glass craft and pottery and from your base in the dignified city of Metz, expert Dr Anne Anderson will guide you through the wonderful works by Gallé, Daum, Lalique and Saint-Louis and how they, and others, used these traditional crafts to promote the principles of their artistic philosophies.
The group size on this tour is limited to 25 passengers to ensure that smaller sites can be visited and that you get a high level of attention.
- Return standard class Eurostar/TGV from St Pancras or Ebbsfleet to Paris and onwards to Metz
- Three nights' bed and breakfast at the four-star Novotel Metz Centre, based on shared occupancy of a twin/double room

Please note: As with most trains, passengers are responsible for carrying baggage onto and off the train. Baggage can be stored on overhead shelves or at the entrance to the carriages. Trollies are available at St Pancras, but bags do need to be carried onto the platform.
Day 2: Morning visit to La Grande Place for the Saint-Louis Crystal Museum, a former royal factory, with over 2000 crystal glass items on display, followed by Meisenthal’s International Glass Centre and Glass Museum, based in a former glass works, where displays and films will help visitors to understand the traditional techniques of making glass. This afternoon, head to Wingen-sur-Moder to the Musée Lalique, which concentrates on the techniques used by Lalique to achieve effects in glass.
Day 3: Today our attention turns to pottery with a visit to Sarreguemines. Following the Faience Circuit, which traces the history of the industry through the city, visits will include: Blies Mill, home of the Museum of Faience Techniques; the Winter Garden Earthenware Museum; and Faience Works Casino, a place of recreation for the workers, richly decorated with tile murals. This evening a lecture, ‘Ancient craft, modern design: art and studio pottery’ followed by dinner with wine at the Art Nouveau Brasserie Flo.
Day 4: Morning visit to the Centre Pompidou Metz, a satellite site of the National Collection of Modern Art in Paris. Afternoon transfer back to the station for the return TGV and Eurostar to Ebbsfleetand St Pancras.
