Walking in South-West Crete

This is a two centre holiday based in the tiny seaside resorts of Sougia and Loutro on the south-west coast of Crete. Both places provide the opportunity to explore this particularly wild, attractive corner of Crete, which remains relatively undeveloped due to the terrain of wonderful undulating countryside, narrow gorges and dramatic mountains that fall sharply into the Libyan sea. Ancient paths, deserted beaches, breath-taking views, historic sites and isloated Byzantine chapels are just a little of what you can expect from this part of Crete.

His passion for Greece is fully represented in his guiding. Jonathan's aims are to introduce the unspoilt places and the beautiful nature in an area as well as to involve the visitor in a very authentic side of Greek life.

Day 1

Fly to Chania from Gatwick or regional airports (subject to availability). Transfer to Captain George Studios, Sougia (approx 1.5 hours). Welcome dinner (included) at local taverna.

Day 2

After breakfast we transfer by boat to Agios Andonios situated east of Sougia, and then walk along coastal paths back to Sougia. We will carry a picnic with us to enjoy on the way.

Day 3

Our walk today is circular starting in Sougia and heading upwards towards the ancient site of Irtakina. Following simple tracks and small gorges, passing churches and some wonderful scenery, there will be time to visit the ancient site of Lissos, where you can see the ruins of the Asclepion of Lissos with its mosiac floors. At the end of our walk we have the choice to return to Sougia by boat or walk back along the coast.

Day 4

We walk from Sougia up to the village of Koustogerako via the cave of the great Cyclops, Polyfemos. The village has a tragic history having been razed to the ground by the Nazis in 1943 because of its partisan/British resistance activity. We will enjoy lunch in the village and perhaps meet some of the villagers. After lunch we descend to the Agia Irini gorge and the village of Moni before transferring back to Sougia.

Day 5

Today we transfer by boat to Agia Roumeli, a village that sits next to the sea at the bottom of the Samaria Gorge. We visit the old village and the Turkish fortress before walking a short way into the gorge to the 'iron gates' the narrowest and one of its most spectacular parts. We have lunch at a local taverna before catching a late afternoon boat to Loutro, a beautiful little village of whitewashed houses and blue shutters that can only be accessed by boat. We check in to our second accommodation, the Porto Loutro Hotel.

Day 6

Today's walk is from Loutro to Livaniaana. Walking a circular route we follow paths to the virtually deserted village of Livanianna. From here we descend the Aradena gorge to Marmara beach where we will have lunch in a taverna before walking back along the coast to Loutro.

Day 7

Our final walk takes us from Loutro up to Anopolis, a small rustic village that was once an ancient and significant city-state. A place of resistance against invaders of the past, Anopolis was razed to the ground on two occasions. Today the village is a peaceful place occupied mainly by shepherbs. We will have lunch in the village before returning the way we came.

Day 8

Transfer back to Chania for return flight home.
