Walking in south west Crete

This is a two centre holiday based in the tiny seaside resorts of Sougia and Loutro on the south-west coast of Crete. Both places provide the opportunity to explore this particularly wild, attractive corner of Crete, which remains relatively undeveloped due to the terrain of wonderful undulating countryside, narrow gorges and dramatic mountains that fall sharply into the Libyan sea. Ancient paths, deserted beaches, breath-taking views, historic sites and isloated Byzantine chapels are just a little of what you can expect from this part of Crete.

5 May 2015 Departure

Day one

Fly to Chania from London Gatwick (or regional airports, subject to availability and supplements). Transfer by coach to Chora Sfakion (approx. 1 ½ hours) and join the ferry to Loutro. A welcome dinner in a local taverna is included this evening. Overnight in Loutro.

Day two

Todays walk is split into two parts. In the morning we take a short transfer by boat along the coast to Sweetwater beach. We then walk back along the coast following part of the ‘E4’ path back to Loutro where we will enjoy lunch in a small taverna. After lunch there will be a second walk to explore the various archaeological remains in and around Loutro.

Day three

The Aradena Gorge. A short transfer by boat takes us to the beach of Maramaras, from where we will walk up the Aradena gorge through spectacular scenery. Once out of the gorge we pass through the village of Livanianna and then head downhill to enjoy a well-deserved lunch by the sea. After lunch we return to Loutro on foot. Overnight stay in Loutro.

Day four

Our walk today takes us from Loutro to Anopolis, a small rustic village that was once an ancient and significant city-state. A place of resistance against invaders of the past, Anopolis was razed to the ground on two occasions. Today the village is a peaceful place occupied mainly by shepherds. We have lunch in the village before returning the way we came. Overnight stay in Loutro.

Day five

Today we transfer by boat to Agia Roumeli, a village that sits next to the sea at the bottom of the Samaria Gorge. We visit the old village and the Turkish fortress before walking as far as the 'iron gates' in the Samaria Gorge, the narrowest and one of its most spectacular parts. We have lunch in a family run taverna before catching the afternoon boat to Sougia. Overnight stay at Captain George Studios, Sougia.

Day six

The Tripiti coast - a short transfer by boat takes us to the cove of Agios Andonios. From here we walk to Sougia along part of the E4 path. Lunch will be taken at Sougia in a small taverna. Overnight stay in Sougia.

Day seven

Our walk today is circular starting in Sougia and heading upwards following simple tracks, passing churches and enjoying enchanting scenery. There will be time to visit the ancient site of Lissos, where you can see the ruins of the Asclepion of Lissos with its mosaic floors, and where there is a beach for those who wish to swim. At the end of our walk we have the choice to return to Sougia by boat or walk back along the coast. Overnight in Sougia.

Day eight

Transfer by coach back to Chania airport for your return flight to London Gatwick.

NB: Exact order of excursions may vary according to local conditions and tour manager's discretion.

Jonathan - tour guide - is brilliant. The only improvement on the tour is (after he had left us on the last day) we should have stopped en route to Hania airport for a meal break. Instead we were dumped at the airport and wasted an hour waiting for check in to open. The only minor sour note at the end of a superb holiday.
