Walking in south west Crete

This is a two centre holiday based in the tiny seaside resorts of Sougia and Loutro on the south-west coast of Crete. Both places provide the opportunity to explore this particularly wild, attractive corner of Crete, which remains relatively undeveloped due to the terrain of wonderful undulating countryside, narrow gorges and dramatic mountains that fall sharply into the Libyan sea. Ancient paths, deserted beaches, breath-taking views, historic sites and isloated Byzantine chapels are just a little of what you can expect from this part of Crete.

Day one

Fly from London Gatwick to Chania. On arrival in Chania, transfer by coach to Sougia (approximately one and a half hours) and the Captain George studios. A welcome dinner in a local taverna is included this evening.

Day two

Full day walk along the coast from Agios Andonios to Sougia. Taking a boat eastwards from Sougia we arrive at Agios Andonios and from here we will make our way back along coastal paths to Sougia stopping en route for our picnic lunch.

Day three

Full day walk from Sougia through Irtakina. Today’s walk is circular and so we will head out of Sougia following simple tracks and small gorges, passing churches and gorgeous scenery as we make our way up to the ancient site of Irtakina. There will be time for a stop at the ancient site of Lissos as well, where we will find the ruins of the Asclepion (a healing temple) of Lissos with its mosaic floor. At the end of the walk, we have the choice to return to Sougia by boat or walk back along the coast.

Day four

Full day walk from Sougia to Koustogerako. We begin walking from Sougia up to the village of Koustogerako. Koustogerako is a village with a tragic history having been razed to the ground in 1943 by the Nazis because of its partisan/British resistance activity. We will have lunch in the village and perhaps meet some of the locals. After lunch we will ramble to the Agia Irini gorge and through to the village of Moni before transferring back to Sougia.

Day five

We depart Sougio transferring to the seaside village of Agia Roumeli by boat. Located at the bottom of the Samaria gorge, we will wander the village and its Turkish fortress before walking a short way into the gorge to the ‘iron gates’, which is the narrowest and one of the most spectacular parts. Taking lunch at a local taverna we will then catch a late afternoon boat to Loutro and the Porto Loutro Hotel. A little village of whitewashed houses and blue shutters sitting around a rocky bay, Loutro is only accessible by boat and has no roads.

Day six

Full day walk from Loutro to Livanianna. Following a circular route we will follow paths to the virtually deserted village of Livanianna. From here we descend through the Aradena gorge to Marmara beach where we will have lunch in a local taverna before taking coastal paths back to Loutro.

Day seven

Full day walk from Loutro to Anopolis. Our final walk will take us from Loutro up to Anopolis, a small rustic village that was once an ancient and significant city-state. A place of resistance against invaders of the past, Anopolis was razed to the ground on two occasions. Today the village is a peaceful place occupied mainly by shepherds. We will have lunch here before returning by the same paths to Loutro.

Day eight

Transfer back to Chania for return flight home.

Transfer by coach back to Chania airport for your return flight to London Gatwick.

NB: Exact order of excursions may vary according to local conditions and tour manager's discretion.

Jonathan - tour guide - is brilliant. The only improvement on the tour is (after he had left us on the last day) we should have stopped en route to Hania airport for a meal break. Instead we were dumped at the airport and wasted an hour waiting for check in to open. The only minor sour note at the end of a superb holiday.
