Walking in south east Crete

Eastern Crete is vastly different from the west. The landscape is less mountainous but more hilly, with a multitude of small gorges and lost valleys where you find old stone villages blending harmoniously with a wild, and often mysterious, landscape and simplistic whitewashed villages. During this tour we will encounter working shepherd communities, abandoned Minoan villages, frescoed Byzantine chapels and medieval monasteries.

Our walks in South-East Crete can be described as easy to medium with walks between six and 12 kilometres a day. Walking boots are advisable due to uneven terrain and clients should be in good health.

Day one

Fly from London Gatwick to Heraklion. On arrival in Heraklion, transfer by coach to Makriyialos (approximately two hours) and the Villea Village hotel. Dinner tonight will be a welcome meal at a local taverna.

Day two

Full day walking in the hills to Makriyialos. Today’s relaxed walking begins with a stroll through the hills before rambling through a small gorge to the traditional village of Pefki. After lunch in a local taverna we will pass through the Pefki gorge, which we will follow to descend back to Makriyialos.

Day three

Full day walk through Dead’s gorge. Transferring by bus to the little village of Ano Zakros (Upper Zakros) on the far east of the island, we descend through Dead’s gorge to the coast at Kato Zakros (Lower Zakros). Don’t worry, this is a beautiful and accessible walk - the gorge is so named because ancient Minoans used caves in the cliffs to bury their dead. In Kato Zakros there will be time to visit the Minoan palace of Zakros before we have lunch in one of the tavernas by the sea. We return to Zakros on foot and transfer back to the hotel.

Day four

Full day walk above the Pervolakia gorge. Heading first to Kapsa monastery, we will have a short visit of the 15th century building built into the hillside before joining a path that runs along the edge of the Pervolakia gorge. This section of the walk will give incredible views of the gorge. From here we turn towards Etia, a village that reached its peak during the Venetian occupation – little remains of the original village but a Venetian mansion still stands at its edge. We will carry a picnic to enjoy en route.

Day five

Free time to relax and explore Makriyialos at your leisure. A small resort on the Libyan Sea, Makriyialos has a small fishing harbour and a long beach.

Day six

Full day walk from Ziros to Sitanos. We will spend today in the agricultural interior of eastern Crete, following a scenic and very natural landscape to the Plateau of Ziros. Taking lunch at a simple taverna in a village en route before returning to Ziros via the deserted medieval village of Voila.

Day seven

Full day walk from Palekastro to the monastery of Toplou. Today’s walk begins along the coastline from the seaside village of Palekastro, passing through a wild barren landscape to reach the 15th century monastery of Toplou. There will be time to visit the monastery before we walk on to the palm beach of Vai. There will be time to swim before we return to the hotel. We will carry a picnic again today to enjoy en route to, or at the beach.

Day eight

Transfer by coach back to Heraklion airport for your return flight to London Gatwick.

NB: Exact order of excursions may vary according to local conditions and tour manager's discretion.

Please note the maximum group size on this tour is 20 passengers.

Please note that walking boots are essential and clients should be in good health. Guided walks are rated as easy to medium, covering six to 12 kilometres a day.

Jonathan looked after us very well and his ability to converse and empathise with local villagers gave us a great insight into Cretan life and customs. We will certainly look forward to seeing him again and enjoying his company and walks. Accommodation very good, setting great and pool massive if you wanted a quick swim. Owner Vasili made us very welcome and we enjoyed his Cretan wine tasting. Breakfast excellent!
