The guide on this South-East Crete tour is Jonathan Peat. Jonathan has been guiding walks in Greece for nearly 20 years. His passion for Greece is fully represented in his guiding. Jonathan's aims are to introduce the unspoilt places and the beautiful nature in an area as well as to involve the visitor in a very authentic side of Greek life.
Day 1: Fly to Heraklion from London Gatwick or regional airports (subject to supplement and availability).
(for departure/arrival times please hover your mouse over the departure dates on the left of this page)
Transfer to Villea Village Hotel, Makriyialos (approx. 2 hours), for a 7-night stay. Welome dinner (included) in a local taverna.
Day 2: We begin with a tranquil walk over scented hills, rambling through a small gorge to the traditional hill village of Pefki. After lunch in a local taverna we descend to the sea at Makriyialos via the picturesque Pefki gorge.
Day 3: Today we walk 'Dead's Gorge' in the far east of the island. Transferring by bus to the village of Zakros we descend 'the valley of the dea' ('Dead's Gorge'), to the coast at Kato Zakros. For those interested there will be time to visit the Minoan Palace of Zakros before lunch in one of the handful of tavernas situated close to the sea. We return, on foot, to Zakros in the afternoon and transfer back to our hotel.
Day 4: Today we head along the coast to the Kapsa Monastery, founded in the 15th century and dramatically built into the hillside at the edge of the Pervolakia Gorge. After a short visit to the monastery we join a path alongside the edge of the gorge, which provides some fantastic views into the gorge, to the village of Pervolakia. From here we head to Etia, a village that reached its peak during the Venetian occupation. Little remains of the original village but a Venetian mansion still stands at its edge. We will carry a picnic to enjoy on the way.
Day 5: Today is at leisure to spend as you wish. A lovely small resort on the Libyan Sea, Makrigialos has a small fishing harbour and a long beach. Everything is within easy reach of the hotel including a wide choice of taverna and cafes.
Day 6: Today's walk is from Ziros to Sitanos. We head into the agricultural interior of eastern Crete, following a scenic and very natural landscape to the Plateau of Ziros. We enjoy lunch in a simple taverna in the village before returning via the deserted medieval village of Voila.
Day 7: Today we enjoy a coastal walk that takes us from the seaside village of Palekastro through wild barren landscape to the fortified 15th century monastery of Toplou. We have time to visit the monastery before continuing our walk to the palm beach of Vai. This beautiful beach, with crystal clear water, is exotically fringed by a palm forest, giving the feel of the Caribbean rather than a Greek island! We will have time for a swim before returning to our hotel. We shall carry a picnic to enjoy on the way or at the beach.
Day 8: Transfer to Heraklion for return flight to the UK.
NB: Exact order of excursions may vary according to local conditions and tour manager's discretion.
Please note the maximum group size on this tour is 20 passengers.
Please note that walking boots are essential and clients should be in good health. Guided walks are rated as easy to medium, covering 6 to 12 kilometres a day.
In the heart of the quiet and relaxed resort of Makrigialos, the Villea Village is built in a traditional whitewashed Greek style, around a verdant garden and large swimming pool. Rooms are simple with a balcony/terrace overlooking the gardens, en-suite bathroom, television and telephone.

Jonathan looked after us very well and his ability to converse and empathise with local villagers gave us a great insight into Cretan life and customs. We will certainly look forward to seeing him again and enjoying his company and walks. Accommodation very good, setting great and pool massive if you wanted a quick swim. Owner Vasili made us very welcome and we enjoyed his Cretan wine tasting. Breakfast excellent!
