Kefalonia
Kefalonia, the backdrop for the popular novel Captain Corelli's Mandolin, is the largest and most spectacular of the Ionian Islands. It is an island of dramatic contrasts; rugged mountains, soaring cliffs, lush valleys, scenic fishing villages, mysterious caves, lovely beaches and charming rural villages clustered around churches and monasteries.
The island has not succumbed to the large crowded resorts that so often take over the inherent charm of a Greek island, so its stunning natural beauty, traditional ways, and warm friendly hospitality have stayed very much intact. Our tour is centred round this charming natural beauty exploring the sites of interest and some of the history of the island.

Day 1
Fly to Kefalonia from Gatwick or regional airports (subject to availability) and transfer by coach to the Hotel Mediterranée for a 7-night stay on bed and breakfast basis.
Day 2
We start our tour with a relaxed first day to introduce you to the local region. Our visits will include St Georges Castle, Gerassimos Monastery, the Robola winery, Argostoli and the Botanical Gardens.
Day 3
Today we head high into the hills visiting the protected national park of Mount Ainos to experience some of the islands exceptional nature. It is the highest mountain on the island, with an altitude that surpasses 1,600m; and is protected due to the Kefalonian fir trees (Abies cephalonia), which dominate the upper altitudes. Our trip today should provide some exceptional views as well the opportunity to discover some of the colourful spring flora during our tour in May.
Day 4
Today's visit is to the east of the island stopping at the charming working town of Sami, with its long waterfront and busy port before visiting the unusual and spectacularly coloured Melissani underground Lake. Our final stop will be the pretty fishing village of Agia Efimia, which exudes an atmosphere of traditional Greek hospitality. Today's visits will also include an optional visit to the Drogarati Cave.
Day 5
Day at leisure with the opportunity to relax and enjoy the facilities of the hotel or to perhaps join an optional excursion to the islands of Lefkada, Scorpios & Meganisi.
Day 6
Today we will enjoy the scenic highlights of the neighbouring island of Ithaka. The island is small, 29km long and 6.5km wide, and particularly beautiful covered in a lush green vegetation that extends to the coast and its white-pebbled pristine beaches. An historic Venetian influence is still in evidence, particularly in the islands capital, Vathy, even though much of the island has been rebuilt since the 1953 earthquake. Unspoilt by tourism and with picturesque towns such as Kioni and Friskes, Ithaca is a lovely little island to explore. After a visit here you will see why Odysseus spent 10 years struggling to get back home to this wonderful island!
Day 7
Venetian Villages - Assos and Fiskardo and stunning Myrtos Beach. The tiny village of Assos has a very romantic and perhaps the most beautiful setting on the island and contains some fine examples of Venetian architecture commonly found on Kefalonia until the 1953 earthquake. En-route to Assos we will have the opportunity to stop and take photos of one of the most photographed beaches in Europe, the famous white-sand beach of Myrtos. The picturesque fishing village of Fiskardo, situated on the northern tip of the island, has a picturesque working harbour overlooked by pretty traditional houses. Local fishing boats line the waterfront, making room for visiting yachts during the summer months. The village stayed almost intact after the earthquake so the village retains many original Venetian built buildings from the 18th century.
Day 8
Transfer to Kefalonia Airport for return flight to the UK.
NB: Exact order of excursions may vary according to local conditions and tour manager's discretion.
Please note the maximum group size on this tour is 28 passengers.
