Welcome reception followed by a private dinner with wine. After dinner Julian Humphrys or Mike Ingram will give a talk on "The Wars of the Roses" which will look at its causes and the events leading to the extinction of the Lancastrian line and the accessions of Edward IV and Richard III.
First we visit Leicester cathedral where Richard III’s remains are to be laid to rest followed by a visit to the new Richard III Visitor Centre and exhibition. The visitor centre entitled ‘King Richard III: Dynasty, Death and Discovery’ will guide visitors through the dramatic story of the kings life, brutal death and the fascinating story of his rediscovery. The Richard III story will be told through state-of-the-art interactive displays and demonstrations from the much debated story of the king’s life and times in a medieval England racked by decades of fighting in the Wars of the Roses to unearthing the astonishing story of the archaeology that led to the rediscovery of the Kings lost remains. We will also get to chance to visit the site of King Richard’s grave, preserved in a quiet, respectful setting. After lunch (not included) it's onto the Bosworth visitor centre. Bosworth, which was fought in 1485, saw the death of Richard III ending the Plantagenet dynasty and ushering the first Tudor King Henry VII. The battle was believed to have taken place on Ambion Hill, near Sutton Cheney, but a study of original documents and an archaeological survey of the area have now pinpointed a site in fields more than a mile to the south west, and you will visit both the visitor centre and the new location. As well as many artefacts in the museum there is a new display 'Richard III - The Making of a Myth' with illustrated displays of the striking artwork of Manga-style artist John Aggs, the exhibition offers a glimpse into the king's life and some of the myths surrounding his death and burial. Evening dinner at the hotel followed by a talk by the Chairman of the Richard III Society, Dr Phil Stone, or Frank Baldwin, Chairman of the Battlefields Trust, or historian Mike Ingram "Richard III - a bloody tyrant?"
This morning we will make a short visit to Kirby Muxloe castle, begun by William Hastings, first Baron Hastings, during the Wars of the Roses. The fortified residence was never completed due to Hastings’ execution by Richard for treason in 1483. Our next visit is to Stoke Hall where we will have a walk around the battlefield of Stoke. Fought in June 1487, Stoke was the last battle of the Wars of the Roses and saw the defeat of the Yorkist force under the Earl of Lincoln and Lord Lovell by a royal army under the Earl of Oxford for the new king Henry VII. Return to the hotel for approximately 17.30.
