Objects on display include a model of King Richard's skull, a case of items from the Greyfriars excavation including decorated floor tiles, a silver penny of Edward IV, and a section of carved stone frieze from the wall of the Greyfriars church. There is also an accurate model of the Blue Boar Inn, the building in Leicester where Richard spent the night before leaving for Bosworth and time prevailing there will be a walking city tour of the main Richard III trail in Leicester, including the castle gate remains where he often syated, the gardens and his statue. After lunch (not included) it's onto the Bosworth Visitor Centre. Bosworth, which was fought in 1485, saw the death of Richard III ending the Plantagenet dynasty and ushering the first Tudor King Henry VII. The battle was believed to have taken place on Ambion Hill, near Sutton Cheney, but a study of original documents and an archaeological survey of the area have now pinpointed a site in fields more than a mile to the south west, and you will visit both the visitor centre and the new location. As well as many artefacts in the museum there is a new display 'Richard III - The Making of a Myth' with illustrated displays of the striking artwork of Manga-style artist John Aggs, the exhibition offers a glimpse into the king's life and some of the myths surrounding his death and burial. Evening dinner at the hotel followed by a talk by the Chairman of the Richard III Society, Dr Phil Stone (April) or Frank Baldwin (July), Chairman of the Battlefields Trust, "Richard III - a bloody tyrant?"
Day 3: This morning we have a short visit to Kirby Muxloe Castle which was begun in 1480 by William Hastings, 1st Baron Hastings, during the period of the Wars of the Roses. This fortified residence on a rectangular plan enclosed by walls and moat was never completed as Hastings was executed for treason by Richard III in 1483. We then move onto Stoke Hall near Newark. After a light lunch we will walk around the battlefield of Stoke. Fought in June 1487, Stoke was the last battle of the Wars of the Roses and saw the defeat of a Yorkist force under the Earl of Lincoln and Lord Lovell by a royal army under the command of the Earl of Oxford. As at Bosworth the Earl of Oxford's troops held the Yorkists and then counter-attacked, breaking the Yorkist army and then destroying them in the rout.
