Art on the South Coast of England

Day 2: First visit of the day is to The Royal Pavilion in Brighton, a Regency fantasy of minarets, domes and pinnacles. Then we go onto see the spectacular collection of European and World ceramics, glass, costume and artefacts at Brighton Museum and Art Gallery. You will also have a private reception and visit to Charleston, the rural retreat of the Bloomsbury Group, which has interiors by Duncan Grant and Vanessa Ball. Dinner in the hotel restaurant.
Day 3: Visit the Towner Art Gallery in Eastbourne with its wonderful local landscapes by John Piper, Ravilious and Edward Bawden. We shall then go to The Jerwood Gallery in Hastings, which opened in 2012, and which has a collection of English works from Stanley Spencer and LS Lowry to Maggi Hambling. Our final visit will be to the De La Warr Pavilion which was designed by Erich Mendelsohn and Serge Chemayeff in 1935, and was inspired both by the modernist ideas that were being developed by the Bauhaus and by the architecture of luxury cruise ships and of Art Deco. Return to the hotel for approximately 17.30pm.
