Arrive independently at the Cavendish hotel, Eastbourne from 15.00. This evening there will be a welcome reception, dinner with wine and an illustrated talk by Gerald Deslandes – ‘Art and Empire: exotic influences at the Royal Pavilion’.
Our first visit of the day is Brighton’s Royal Pavilion – a regency fantasy of minarets, domes and pinnacles built for George, Prince of Wales, who was to become King George IV, as a seaside retreat. From here we continue to the Brighton museum and art gallery to view the excellent collection of European and World ceramics, glass, costume and artefacts. In the late afternoon we will travel to Lewes to enjoy a private reception and visit of Charleston Farmhouse, the rural retreat of the Bloomsbury Group, and a prime example of the domestic decorative style of Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant. On our return to the hotel there will be dinner in the hotel restaurant.
Our first visit today will be to the Towner art gallery in Eastbourne where we’ll find local landscapes by Piper, Ravilious and Bawden followed by the Jerwood gallery in Hastings with its collection of English works including Spencer, Lowry and Hambling. Our final visit will be to the De La Warr Pavilion, designed by Erich Mendelsohn and Serge Chemayeff in 1935, which was inspired by the Modernist ideas of the Bauhaus mixed with Art Deco. Return to the hotel for approximately 17.30.
