Day one

Fly to Moscow staying three nights at either the central four star hotel Marriott Tverskaya or the Courtyard Marriott, within easy reach of Red Square.

Day two

On our tour you see the 16th century Novodevichy convent where Russian noblewomen would retire whilst the adjacent cemetery contains many famous names: Chekhov, Prokofiev, Khrushchev and Yeltsin to name but a few. We’ll also visit the enormous riverside Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. Other highlights include the world famous Bolshoi Theatre, Lubyanka Square –home of the KGB, Tverskaya - Moscow’s main thoroughfare and the legendary Red Square, home to the GUM, and the 16th century St Basil’s Cathedral with its multicoloured domes. This afternoon is at leisure.

Day three

This morning you tour the 15th century Kremlin. The heart of Russian power, built by Ivan the Great with fortifications by Italian master stonemasons, it was the world’s largest medieval fortress. You’ll learn about its history seeing three cathedrals, the royal residence Terem Palace, plus the power base during Soviet times the Palace of the Congresses. We will also visit the Great Kremlin Palace, a 700 room former Tsarist home with its splendid 16th century Armoury collection and an entire room displaying jewellery and legendary Fabergé ‘eggs’. This afternoon, you are free to explore further the museums and galleries nearby.

Day four

Moscow is proud of its Metro, featuring some of the city’s most momentous architectural works with reflective marble walls, chandeliers, mosaics and statues with our tour visiting some of the most striking. This afternoon we leave Moscow taking the new Sapsan high speed train across the Russian plains to the home of Peter and Catherine the Great; St Petersburg. We stay three nights at the four star Novotel, ideally located just off Nevsky Prospekt, one of the city’s shopping streets, and within walking distance to most of the sights.

Day five

During our guided tour you experience religious icons such as the Alexander Nevsky monastery, the golden dome of St Isaac’s cathedral and the towers of the Church of the Holy Blood. You visit grand boulevards like Nevsky Prospekt, plus the canals and arched bridges, the River Neva and Palace Square. Nearby is the battle-cruiser Aurora, whose guns symbolically fired in 1917 initialising the Russian revolution, and the Peter and Paul fortress with the cathedral holding the tombs of Peter the Great and the Romanovs. This afternoon we visit the Hermitage, the building complex including the marble, fine glassware and gilt of the Tsar’s winter palace, now displaying one of the world’s finest museum collections of over three million artefacts. The European paintings alone occupy 120 rooms including masterpieces by Da Vinci, Raphael, Rembrandt, Monet and Michelangelo.

Day six

This morning we explore Catherine the Great’s Peterhof with its gardens, fountains and palaces. The baroque Grand Palace is packed with fine art highlighted by the throne room. Outside, the 1,500 acres of landscaped formal parkland display bronze sculptures and summerhouses with geometrically arranged flowerbeds. The final spectacle is the Grand Cascade of 176 fountains. This afternoon you are free to explore the city’s attractions - perhaps a boat trip observing the waterfront, the huge golden dome of St Isaac’s cathedral, or alternatively just stroll along the river lined by 19th century merchants’ houses.
