Cotswolds Arts & Crafts Traditions

Visit the private homes of Cotswold Farm and Owlpen Manor

The natural beauty of the Cotswolds became the backdrop of the Arts and Crafts Movement in the early 20th century, with many artists and craftsmen following in the footsteps of William Morris, whose country home was at Kelmscott Manor, and settling in the villages throughout the area. These Arts and Crafts practitioners drawn here not only for the natural charms of the unspoilt countryside but by the rich craft traditions the spirit of which still flourishes here today. This tour explores Owlpen Manor, bought back from ruin by Norman Jewson in 1926 in accordance with Morris' philosophy of conservation, and Cotswold Farm, extended by Sidney Barnsley, where the current owner will be able to show you around personally. You will also spend time in Chipping Campden where, in 1902, CR Ashbee and some 100 followers settled, bringing with them the ethos of the Guild of Handicraft, originally established in Toynbee Hall in London's East End. Here you will get a glimpse of the craftsman at work at Hart's Gold and Silversmiths, and visit the Court Barn Museum to see examples of the Guild's work. There will also be a visit to the Gordon Russell Museum in Broadway, and cream tea at the famous Lygon Arms, once owned by Russell's parents.

Friday

The first visit of the day is to Cotswold Farm, privately owned by Iona Birchill who will guide you around her beautiful arts and crafts home. In 1926 the architect Sidney Barnsley, extended the house in the Arts & Crafts style and enriched the interior with elaborate plaster work. The old farm buildings, dovecote and summer house also echo the Barnsley-Cotswold style. Later, in the 1930's, Norman Jewson laid out the terrace and the gardens enclosed by Cotswold stone walls. A light lunch (included) will be provided before we travel to Owlpen Manor. It was Ernest Gimon's assistant Norman Jewson who bought Owlpen Manor as a ruin in 1926; it had been uninhabited for nearly 100 years. Like Kelmscott Manor, Owlpen today preserves the spirit of the Cotswolds, having been enhanced by a representative collection of "Cotswold school" furniture acquired by the Mander family. Evening talk at the hotel by Mary Greensted (April) "The City of the Sun: Chipping Campden and the Arts and Crafts Movement' or Dr Anne Anderson (July) 'Good Citizen Furniture from Ashbee to Gordon Russell', followed by dinner in the hotel restaurant.

Saturday

Today you will visit the North Cotswold towns of Chipping Campden and Broadway. In Chipping Campden you will have a guided visit of Hart's Gold & Silversmiths workshop and the Museum of Craft & Design at Court Barn, as well as a walking tour around this unique and historic town. After lunch (not included) you will travel to Broadway, a village which has attracted many artists, writers and composers including JM Barrie, Edward Elgar, John singer Sargent and Ralph Vaughan Williams. Here, sitting alongside many antiques shops is the Gordon Russell Museum, which celebrates the work od the renowned 20th century furniture designer and the company he founded. To end the day, you will have tea at the famous Lygon Arms hotel, acquired by Gordon Russell's parents in 1904. It was here he acquired his knowledge of the crafts by repairing old furniture, much of it for the hotel. Return to the hotel for approximately 18.00pm.
