The Darmstadt artists' colony

In 1899, Ernest Ludwig, Grand Duke of Hesse, bought together a group of architects, designers, sculptors and craftsmen in the city of Darmstadt to form the ‘Kunsterkolonie’ (artists’ colony). These artists, conforming to the ‘total art’ ideals of Jugendstil, the Germany incarnation of Art Nouveau, aimed to develop forward-looking architecture for working and living which, through a series of exhibitions between 1901 and 1914, led to the construction of the Mathildenhöhe complex. Explore this fascinating and remarkable legacy with Dr Anne Anderson.

Check in to hotel for a three night stay. Welcome drink, evening lecture, “Arts and Crafts or Art and Industry: The Darmstadt Artist Colony” and dinner with wine at the hotel.
