Day 2: Your first visit is to Ostia, the excavated Roman port about 15 miles from Rome, which is as astonishing a place as more famous Pompeii. Here corn, wine and oil was stored and then shipped up the river Tiber to supply the vast city. Here you will walk through the red-brick ruins of the 2nd century AD town with its balconied streets, houses, theatre, squares, temples and mosaics - you will also visit the fine small museum. On the way back a short stop will be made at Mussolini's EUR, the remarkable Roman-inspired buildings intended for the World Expo of 1942. Dinner with wine and evening lecture: "The many faces of Rome".
Day 3: Today you explore the centre of the Empire: starting with the great symbol of Roman power, the arena of the Colosseum. The day also includes the Constantine Arch, the church of San Clemente, the fortified 12th century church and monastery of Santi Quattro Coronati, and the vast complex of buildings and ruins that make up the Forum at the heart of the city.
Day 4: Finally, a stroll through the Campus Martius, full of Roman remains - the Column of Marcus Aurelius, the Temple of Hadrian, the Pantheon with its sensational dome, the Piazza Navona (once the emperor Domitian's chariot racing circus) and the extraordinary Roman theatre of Marcellus amongst the highlights. Afternoon transfer to the airport for return flight to London Heathrow.
NB: Exact order of excursions may vary according to local conditions and tour manager's discretion.
