Padova & the birth of the Renaissance

Without the work of Giotto, widely regarded as the father of Western art, in Padova in the early years of the 14th century, the explosion of Italian art in the following years may not have happened in the way that it did.

This fascinating tour explores his influence in the company of renowned art historian, Clare Ford-Wille and visits to the renowned Scrovegni Chapel as well as other artistic highlights of the wonderful city of Padova such as the 14th century Eremitani Church as well as a visit to the lovely city of Verona.

The group size on this tour is limited to 25 passengers to ensure that smaller sites can be visited and that you get a high level of attention.

Day 1

Fly with British Airways from Gatwick to Verona. Short visit of Verona including the church of San Zeno before transferring (approx 1 hour) to hotel for check in for 3-night stay. Evening welcome drink and lecture, "Giotto and the Art of Fresco in the Arena Chapel in Padua", followed by dinner with wine in the hotel restaurant.

Day 2

Morning timed visit to the Scrovegni Chapel, lavishly decorated by Giotto from 1303 to 1305, (each timed visit lasts 15 minutes) to see Giotto's masterpiece depicting biblical scenes and the renowned "Coretti", an exercise in perspective that creates the illusion of an arch with a room beyond. This is followed by the 13th century Eremitani Church, famed for its magnificent roof and the 15th century frescoes by Mantegna. In the afternoon, your exploration of Padova continues with visits to the Basilica of Saint Anthony and the Scuola del Santo & Oratorio di S. Giorgio, which includes the earliest documented painting by Titian, dating from the early 1500's.

Day 3

Morning visit to the University of Padova theatre and the 12th century Baptistry of the Cathedral with time given for lunch before an afternoon visit to the Benedictine Abbey of Pomposa, a little known gem with its frescoed church and 11th century Campanile. Evening lecture, "Painting in Padua after Giotto:Giusto da Menabuoi to Mantegna", followed by dinner in the hotel restaurant.

Day 4

Transfer to the airport for return flight to Gatwick.
