Real Exotic Marigold Hotel

Few things inspire travel like a good movie and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is no exception. Drawing on themes and locations from this famous British movie, we have put together a new trip to India designed to give you the best of the world Judi Dench and her fellow actors enjoyed, while showing you some colourful rural villages and the wonderful sites of the Golden Triangle.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is in fact Rawla Khempur, an old favourite of Wild Frontiers and a palace at which you will enjoy two nights. This charming rural hotel, with a history dating from the early 17th Century, was once famed for its stud of fine Marwari horses and is still home to dancing stallions which perform, when requested, in front of the magnificent turreted building. An equine theme runs through each of the hotel's 12 comfortable en suite bedrooms, while a number of quiet nooks and crannies, including a heavenly rooftop terrace, are dotted about the rest of the hotel. The village outside is quiet and picturesque.

This is India at its most enticing. Add to that Delhi, the Taj Mahal, Jaipur and her bustling bazaars, and the stunning lake city of Udaipur, and you have the makings of perfect ‘first timers’ trip to India.

Day one: Delhi

Tour Starts in Delhi. Today we begin with lunch and an afternoon exploring India's capital city. We'll see Chandi Chowk and the Jama Masjid Mosque among other things.

Day two: Delhi - Agra

This morning we will explore some of south Delhi before moving on to the ghost town of Fatephur Sikri and arrive in Agra late afternoon. As it is Friday the Taj is closed but we will have a great view at dinner.

Day three: Agra - Jaipur

Rising early we visit the Taj Mahal for sunrise. We can take our time looking around the property and may well have time to visit Agra Fort before continuing to Jaipiur, arriving early evening.

Day four: Jaipur

The 'Pink City' is where the 'Best Exotic Marigold Hotel' was set and filmed and has an abundance of wonderful sites including the Amber Fort, Palace of the Winds and City Palace Museum.

Day five: Jaipur

We have a second day to take in more of Jaipur, visit the bazaars, the marigold flower market and Kanota Fort.

Day six: Jaipur - Pushkar

Moving on, this morning we arrive in the peaceful Hindu pilgrimage town of Pushkar, home of the only temple in India dedicated to the god of creation, Brahma.

Day seven: Pushkar - Khempur

After breakfast we'll begin our five to six hour drive to Khempur. On arrival we will check into the real exotic Marigold hotel - which is a lot more comfortable than the film suggests!

Day eight: Khempur

Today is free to enjoy Ravla Khempur in its charming setting and with its fine collection of Marwari horses.

Day nine: Khempur - Udaipur

Udaipur, the Venice of the east, is only a short drive away so we aim to arrive mid-morning and have an orientation walk around the main areas.

Day 10: Udaipur

Getting lost in Udaipur is part of the fun, so wander the alleyways and soak up this most romantic and relaxed of Indian cities. Highlights include the Monsoon palace and Jain temples.

Day 11: Udaipur

Our tour concludes this morning after breakfast.
In Rajasthan generally you can experience some of the finest accommodation the subcontinent has to offer. From wonderful converted palaces, castles and forts – you will not be disappointed. Indeed the accommodation that one uses in Rajasthan is one of the main joys of visiting the land of Kings. However this is still India and heritage properties are old buildings, and although possessing great character, certain forts’ facilities are sometimes not quite up to Western standards and therefore patience is occasionally required. On this tour you will stay at 5 star hotels in both Delhi and Agra and like Rawla Khempur, AKA the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, at the other locations you’ll be in the quirky converted heritage palace hotels.
