Visit the wonderful Watts Gallery and Royal Holloway University

The Victorian era saw the rise of philanthropy, particularly the preoccupation with social improvement through creative enlightenment and beautiful revival art and architecture was used to lessen the ugliness of industrialisation and urban sprawl. On this tour you will examine these ideas with Victorian arts & design expert Dr Anne Anderson or Mike Hope, and visit some wonderful examples such as the newly reopened Watts Gallery and his unique studio home Limnerlease, Watts Mortuary Chapel, Royal Holloway University, and St Michael and St Mary Magdalene's Church to view Burne-Jones' masterpiece The Last Judgement.

Thursday

Evening introductory lecture by Dr Anne Anderson or Mike Hope, 'Victorian Dreamers: Watts and Holloway', followed by dinner with wine.

Friday

Morning guided tour of the astonishing and extravagant Royal Holloway, University of London. Royal Holloway College was founded in 1879 by entrepreneur and philanthropist Thomas Holloway as a woman only institution. You will visit the Founder's Building, which is based on the Loire's Chateau Chambord, the Founder's Library, College Chapel and The Picture Gallery, which is filled with Victorian classics. A light lunch is included. In the afternoon we will visit St. Michael & St Mary Magdalene Church in Easthampstead, to view the four stained glass windows by Sir-Edward Burne-Jones in collaboration with Morris & Co. including The Last Judgement. Evening talk by Dr Anne Anderson or Mike Hope "G.F Watts and Mary Watts: Visionary Dreamers" followed by dinner.

Saturday

To Watts Gallery in Compton, Surrey, home to over 6000 paintings and sculptures. Reopened in 2010 following extensive restoration, the gallery was originally founded by George Frederic Watts and his wife Mary Fraser-Tytler to showcase his work. You will also visit the extraordinary Mortuary Chapel, designed by Mary Fraser-Tytler in the Gothic Revival style and paid for by Watts, the chapel was a gift to the villagers of Compton who helped to build it and decorate the interior - a classic example of Victorian philanthropy. After a light lunch (included), we will have a tour of Limnerslease, the home and studio of the eminent painter G. F Watts, which was commissioned from the Arts & Crafts architect Ernest George. Our final visit of the day is to Norney Grange, an outstanding Arts & Crafts house by the architect C.F.A Voysey, where the proud owner Russell Clapshaw will show us around. Return to the hotel for approximately 17.00pm.
