Arts and crafts of Surrey

The Victorian era saw the rise of philanthropy, particularly the preoccupation with social improvement through creative enlightenment and beautiful revival art and architecture was used to lessen the ugliness of industrialisation and urban sprawl.

On this tour you will examine these ideas with Victorian arts & design expert Dr Anne Anderson, and visit some wonderful examples such as the newly reopened Watts Gallery and his unique studio home Limnerlease, Watts Mortuary Chapel, Royal Holloway University, and St Michael and St Mary Magdalene's Church to view Burne-Jones' masterpiece The Last Judgement.

Day one

Arrive independently at the Legacy Thatcher’s hotel, Horsley from 15.00. This evening there will be a private dinner with wine and a talk by Dr Anne Anderson– ‘Victorian Dreamers: Watts and Holloway’.

Day two

This morning we will visit the magnificent Royal Holloway, now part of the University of London. Royal Holloway College was founded in 1879 by entrepreneur and philanthropist Thomas Holloway as a woman only institution. We will visit the Founder’s Library, College Chapel and the Picture Gallery, which is full of Victorian classics. After a light lunch we will continue to St Michael and St Mary Magdalene church in Easthampstead, to view the four stained glass windows by Sir Edward Burne-Jones in collaboration with Morris and Co. which includes the beautiful Last Judgement. This evening there will be a second lecture by Dr Anderson – ‘G.F Watts and Mary Watts: Visionary Dreamers’ plus dinner in the hotel restaurant.

Day three

We begin our day at the excellent Watts gallery in Compton, which is home to over 6000 of Watts’ paintings and sculptures. Reopened in 2010 following extensive restoration, the gallery was originally founded by Watts and his wife Mary Fraser-Tytler in 1904 to showcase his work. We will also visit the extraordinary Mortuary chapel, designed by Mary Fraser-Tytler in the Gothic Revival style and paid for by Watts, the chapel was a gift to the villagers of Compton who helped to build it and decorate the interior - a classic example of Victorian philanthropy. After a light lunch we will have a tour of Limnerslease, Watts’ home and studio, which he commissioned from the Arts and Crafts architect Ernest George. Our final visit of the day is to Norney Grange, an Arts and Crafts house by the architect C.F.A Voysey, where the proud owner Russell Clapshaw will show us around. Return to the hotel for approximately 17.30.

NB: Exact order of excursions may vary according to local conditions and tour manager's discretion.
