Walking in Lesvos

Lesvos is a wonderfully unspoilt island, one of very few of the Greek islands that has been little affected by mass tourism. It offers beautiful beaches, timeless traditional villages, small scenic harbours, a wonderful coastline and a lush spectacular interior; rolling fertile valleys, rich woodlands, salt marshes, streams, seasonal rivers, flat lands, wetlands, hills and high mountains. This magnificent nature, spectacular scenery and host of ancient tracks make Lesvos an ideal destination for walking. In May you will be accompanied by the exceptional colours of spring and, in both spring and autumn, you will have the opportunity to spot a wide vareity of bird life as Lesvos is an annual resting place during the spring and autumn migration.

Our base for these walks is the tiny village resort of Petra, situated on the island's north coast. Our routes will take us along mule tracks and stone paths, through ancient olive groves and pine forests. We will enjoy some spectacular coastal scenery and beautiful views following trails to historic monasteries, pretty churches and traditional villages.

The itinerary includes five guided walks, graded easy to medium, covering a distance of six to 12 kilometres a day on sometimes undulating paths. Lunches will be arranged in local tavernas on our walking days and a welcome dinner is included on the first evening. Clients should be in good health. Walking boots are advisable as the terrain can be uneven at times and boots provide the best protection for such terrain.

Day one

Fly from London to Mytilene. On arrival in Mytilene, transfer by coach to Petra (approx. one hour) and the Hotel Alma. Tonight, there will be a welcome dinner at a local taverna.

Day two

Full day walk in the local countryside. We begin the holiday with a walk in the countryside around our base taking a circular route from Petra via the village of Lafionas on the slopes of Mount Skotino and Agios Alexandros.

Day three

Full day walk from Kalloni to Skala. Transferring to Kalloni we will begin today’s walk following a gentle route to three old monasteries. The walk finishes by the sea at Skala, where we will have time to have lunch and have a swim.

Day four

Full day walk from Agiassos to the bay of Gera. Transferring by bus to the traditional mountain village of Agiassos we will have a bit of time to explore before setting off on today’s walk. Following paved paths and rural roads we pass through forests and enjoy spectacular views of the bay of Gera and, in the distance, the coastline of Turkey.

Day five

Free time to relax and explore Petra at your leisure. Petra has a long sand beach to enjoy as well as an old Turkish house that is said to be Lesvos’ oldest. You are also only five kilometres from Molyvos, considered the most beautiful town on the island.

Day six

Full day walk from Agia Paraskevi to Kremasti. Transferring to Agia Paraskevi we will set off down rural paths to the Monastery of Prini. From here we continue through the olive groves to the archaeological site of Klopedi to explore its ancient Aeolian temple ruins. Moving on from Klopedi we descend to the Papa Lakos region and the Tsiknia River following a dirt road to the stone bridge of Kremasti, an architectural monument built in the middle ages.

Day seven

Full day walk from Anemotia to Parakila. This area is particularly lush thanks to an abundance of water – there are plenty of plane trees, oleanders and willows to find some shade under on our walk. We’ll also stroll through the only black pine forest on Lesvos, a rare sight on the Aegean Islands.

Day eight

Transfer back to Mytilene airport for the return flight to London.

My longstanding wish to visit Lesvos was fulfilled. The walks were well chosen; only one was a little strenuous. I wish that on the free day there had been the option of visiting Mytiline. Petra is tiny, with nothing to do and I could find no public bus service.
