Day One

Leaving the local area in the early morning we'll head to Scotland, stopping en route in the delightful town of Moffat - with its excellent range of cafes and gift shops, walks and gardens, it's the perfect place to break the journey. We will then continue to our weekend hotel.

Day Two

After a full Scottish breakfast, we'll board the steam-hauled Bo'ness and Kinneil railway for a round trip along the southern shore of the Firth of Forth. After the chance to visit the Scottish Railway Exhibition at Bo'ness, we'll continue to Edinburgh. Join our short orientation city tour, on which you'll see Jenners - the oldest department store in the world - the Castle, St Giles Cathedral, the Princes Street Gardens, the Sir Walter Scott monument and the Royal Mile, before enjoying an afternoon of exploring, perhaps visiting Holyroodhouse (entry fee payable locally). In the early evening we'll head to the esplanade of Edinburgh Castle for the Military Tattoo - the highlight of our visit - for a fantastic evening of music and colour, pomp and pageantry, which ends with the spectacle of the lone piper patrolling the battlements, silhouetted against the night sky. We'll leave Edinburgh at the end of the Tattoo, arriving back at the hotel some time after midnight.

Day Three

This morning we'll head to the famous Trossachs, an outstandingly beautiful area of mountains, lochs, rivers and woodlands, which has inspired Scottish poets and writers for generations. We'll then cruise the sparkling waters of Loch Katrine, aboard the screw steamer SS 'Sir Walter Scott', before visiting the quaint town of Callander (the 'Tannochbrae' of TV's 'Dr Finlay's Casebook').

Day Four

After breakfast we'll head to Gretna Green - a favoured wedding venue for eloping couples since 1745! Weddings still take place every day at The Old Blacksmith's Shop. The complex also houses an exhibition, a sculpture garden and a few shops. Time-permitting, we'll also stop at the Gretna Gateway Outlet Village, where all the stores offer up to 50 per cent off their normal high street prices. In the afternoon we'll head home, returning to your local area by early to mid evening.
