Day Two
Today is spent at sea, enjoying the atmosphere on board and getting to know Marco Polo's wonderful on-board amenities.
Day Three
This afternoon Marco Polo docks in "wonderful, wonderful" Copenhagen. Stroll the stylish streets, or enjoy an excursion taking in the famous sights including the famous bronze statuette of the 'Little Mermaid'. Watch the world go by from a harbour-side bar in Nyhavn, and don't miss the sculpted walkways of the world-famous Tivoli Gardens.
Day Four
This morning Marco Polo arrives in the Baltic port of Warnemunde, gateway to the city of Rostock. Seat of northern Europe's oldest university, Rostock retains much of its medieval charm in the gabled houses and preserved warehouses surrounding Neuer Markt, the city's main square. However, for many the main attraction of this stop will be our optional excursion to Berlin. Rapidly re-emerging as one of the world's great cities, Berlin is an unforgettable place. Stroll from the arch of the Brandenburg Gate down Unter den Linden to explore the former East German sector; browse the shops on the 'Ku'damm'; and take in the various remnants of 20th Century conflict - from Hitler's Bunker to Checkpoint Charlie and the rebuilt Potsdamer Platz.
Day Five
Another day spent at sea cruising under, hopefully, sunny skies.
Day Six
Almost impossibly beautiful, the Estonian capital Tallinn, with its enchanting and virtually pristine Old Town, is one of Europe's most scenic cities. Discover this timeless gem, with its winding cobbled streets of storybook houses, spectacular steepled churches, ancient buildings and Toompea Castle.
Days Seven and Eight
Marco Polo will spend two days at the docks of St Petersburg, one of the world's most startling, shimmering, glorious cities. We'll have lots of time in the city, so don't miss the incomparable Hermitage Museum, the wide canal-side boulevards and the chance to explore the city's Haymarket, so redolent with scenes from Dostoyevsky's novels. Gaze in awe at the opulence of the Marinsky Theatre, home to the world renowned Kirov Ballet, soak up the modern 'European' atmosphere, and perhaps join an excursion to the Tsars' Summer Palace at Petrodvorets.
Day Nine
This morning's destination is the wonderful port of Helsinki, where the City Hall overlooks the fresh fish stalls and historic, covered Market Hall in Market Square. Stroll through Esplanade Park, and take in the panoramic views of the city and the sea beyond from the cathedral tower before we set sail once more in the afternoon.
Day 10
Be on deck early this morning as Marco Polo passes the myriad islands surrounding the Swedish capital, Stockholm. The city itself is built across 14 such islets, and is best explored on foot. One third water, one third city and one third green landscape, Stockholm offers a wonderful mix of historic sights, labyrinthine cobbled streets and fine parks.
Day 11
Today is spent at sea, hopefully bathed in late-summer sunshine. Late this evening we'll arrive in Holtenau and begin our passage through the Kiel Canal.
Day 12
On our final full day it's worth rising early to catch the last stages of Marco Polo's passage through the Kiel Canal to Brunsbuttel. The rest of the day is spent at sea, perhaps to relive the adventures of the holiday.
Day 13
Marco Polo arrives back in Tilbury at the end of the cruise.
