Day 1
Fly with British Airways from Gatwick to Venice and transfer by coach to Piazzale Roma and onwards the short distance (approx 200 metres) on foot to check into the 4-star Carlton Hotel for 3 nights. Welcome reception, dinner with wine and evening lecture: "Venezianità: the uniqueness of Venetian culture and its tradition".
Day 2
In the morning you will visit Longhena's extravagant Baroque church Santa Maria della Salute, followed by a visit to the Accademia - the main gallery of Venetian art. The afternoon continues with one of Venice's many landmarks, the extraordinary Palazzo Ducale, and the church of San Marco, followed by a walk to the Arsenale. Dinner with wine and evening lecture: "Art and the Venetian state: the scuole (charitable confraternities) and their role in the development of Venetian culture".
Day 3
First on the morning agenda is the Franciscan church of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, including Titian's magnificent Assumption of the Virgin, and Pesaro's Madonna. Then it's off to the Scuola Grande di San Rocco to view the superb Tintoretto decorative schemes. In the afternoon, you head to the island of San Giorgio Maggiore to visit Palladio's church of 1559-80 and then along the Guidecca to visit Palladio's masterpiece, Il Redentore. The day ends with visit to the Scuola di San Giorgio delgi Schiavoni, including viewing the magnificent paintings by Carpaccio.
Day 4
Morning free (with vaporetto pass at your disposal to explore further individually). Lunchtime transfer to the airport for return flight to London Gatwick.
