Gaudi & the Catalan Modernists
Barcelona is rightly renowned for the work of Gaudi, whose contribution to the city's architecture is enormous, but other architects have also left their mark on this wonderful city. This tour, accompanied by Dr. Anne Anderson or Mike Hope, explores the astounding innovation in architecture and design in the early 20th century with visits to a wealth of Modernist masterpieces, whose extraordinary and elaborate designs belie their every day use - a hospital, apartment block, private houses, a municipal park as well as public buildings commissioned on a grander scale such as the Sagrada Familia and Palau de la Musica Catalana.

Day 1
Fly with British Airways from Heathrow to Barcelona and transfer by coach to your hotel, the Pere IV, for a 3-night stay. En-route, your first of many highlights of this tour, is a visit to the symbol of Barcelona, Gaudi's Sagrada Familia (in the event of a flight delay, this tour will be fitted into the subsequent days). Welcome reception, dinner with wine and evening lecture: "Catalonian Modernism: new art for the 20th century".
Day 2
A wonderful day full of visits exploring the architecture of the Modernists, starting with the new Museu del Modernisme and on to Gaudi's Casa Batllo, one of an extraordinary terrace of Modernist houses and his Casa Mila, La Pedrera (the quarry). Evening lecture at the hotel "Gaudi & his legacy", followed by coach transfer to the Modernist Espana Hotel for tour of the building and set dinner with wine.
Day 3
A morning guided tour of the amazing Hospital Sant Pau, designed by Lluis Domenech I Montaner in 1901 and a working hospital until 2009. Then it's off to Parc Guell, an extraordinary collection of municipal architecture and also home to the Gaudi House Museum.
Day 4
Two rewarding visits before you leave Barcelona, in the old part of the city close to Las Ramblas - a guided tour of the exquisite Palau de la Musica Catalana and Gaudi's Palau Guell, built in 1890. Continue to the airport for the return flight to London Heathrow.
