Florence & the Renaissance

When one considers Italian art, Florence perhaps, is the first place that springs to mind and with good reason. As the birthplace of the Renaissance, it is packed with countless masterpieces, both in its museums and its public buildings, reflecting its pre-eminence in the 15th and 16th centuries. This tour investigates this momentous artistic period with lectures by Dr. Peter Higginson and a series of visits.

Day 1
Fly with Meridiana from Gatwick direct to Florence and transfer by coach to the city centre to check in to your hotel for a 3-night stay. Afternoon orientation walking tour of Florence - from the state centre of the Piazza della Signoria (including Donatello, Michelangelo, Cellini), to the sculpture at the Orsanmichele, and to the religious centre of Piazza del Duomo (including Baptistry doors of Ghiberti, and Brunelleschi's dome). Welcome reception, dinner with wine and evening lecture: "Forming the Renaissance style; imitating Nature and the Ancients". 

Day 2
Morning visit to the Basilica of Santa Croce (including Cimabue, and Giotto), and the Brunelleschi's Pazzi chapel. Continue in the afternoon from the Ponte Vecchio to the Oltrarno: Masaccio's Brancacci Chapel, Brunelleshi's Santo Spirito, and Pontormo's Entombment at Santa Felicita. Dinner with wine and evening lecture: "From the High Renaissance to Mannerism: art, philosophy, the state, and the identity of Man". 

Day 3
In the morning see the Fra Angelico's at the convent of San Marco; Castagno's Last Supper at Sant' Apollonia; Gozzoli's Adoration of the Magi in the Palazzo Medici-Ricardi. The afternoon's itinerary includes the Accademia (that houses Michelangelo's David), the church of San Lorenzo, Michelangelo's Laurentian Library, and his sculptures in the Medici Chapel. 

Day 4
Most of the day is free for personal exploration of the city with a wealth of art and history to uncover - or you may prefer to explore the market, lunch or an ice cream at Vivoli, Florence's best gelateria. Late afternoon transfer to Florence Airport for return flight to London Gatwick.
