Baroque art, architecture & sculpture
There is so much to see in Rome that it can be overwhelming, but this unique tour concentrates on the Baroque period, which beings in St Peter's, a host of other churches and one of the city's best art galleries. Two artists emerge supreme from this period and location - Caravaggio and Bernini - and Dr. Peter Higginson will enlighten you on their history and enduring legacy during the course of this fascinating short visit.

Day 1
Fly with Alitalia from Heathrow to Rome and transfer by coach to the 4-star Beverly Hills Hotel for a 3-night stay. Welcome reception, dinner with wine and evening lecture: "Caravaggio and the origins of Baroque painting in Rome".
Day 2
The morning begins with the spectacle and theatre that is the Piazza del Popolo and continues with Caravaggio's Cerisi Chapel and his paintings in San Luigi dei Francesi and San Agostino. In the afternoon, your exporation of the Baroque will continue with Piazza Navona, including Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers, followed by a walk via Campo dei Fiori and Borromini's illusionistic colonnade, to the Jesuit church of Il Gesu of S.Ignazio, including Pozzo's spectacular ceiling. Dinner with wine and evening lecture: "Bernini and the emergence of the Baroque in architecture and sculptures".
Day 3
Your day starts with Bernini's Ecstasy of St. Theresa in Santa Maria della Vittoria and his church of San Andrea al Quirinale, followed by Borromini's San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane and the Trevi Fountain itself. The afternoon presents one of the trip's highlights, a visit to the Galleria Borghese: Cardinal Borghese's blockbuster Baroque collection.
Day 4
A morning spent walking the pilgrimage route to St Peter's and a visit to the Piazza di S.Pietro and the Basilica. Afternoon transfer to the airport for return flight to London Heathrow.NB: Exact order of excursions may vary according to local conditions and tour manager's discretion.
