Friday evening
Illustrated talk by Suffolk archaeologist, Judith Plouviez, “Pre-medieval archaeology in the county of Suffolk.”Judith is Treasurer of the British Archaeological Trust and was involved in the Wickham Market find of Iron Age coins dated from 40BC to AD15, estimated at a modern equivalent of over £500,000.

Saturday
First you will visit 12th century Orford Castle close to one of the prettiest villages on the Suffolk coast and a true gem. A thriving port in the Middle Ages, it was where Eleanor of Aquitaine set off to ransom her son Richard Coeur de Lion. Then it’s the historic market town of Framlingham for lunch (not included) and its castle, built by Roger Bigod, Earl of Norfolk, in the 12th century. And finally you head to Otley Hall, a stunningly beautiful 16th century moated Hall. A Grade 1 listed building and still a family home, it is set in 10 acres of gardens in the tranquil Suffolk countryside and is a perfect example of unspoiled late medieval architecture. Particularly impressive are the Great Hall and Linenfold Parlour, both of which look out onto the Rose Garden unequalled in Suffolk. This private visit, which includes the garden and homemade cake and biscuits with tea, gives you a tantalising glimpse of its extravagant past.Saturday evening: Talk by Mike Stone, "Everyday Life in Saxon and Medieval Times".

Sunday
Travel into Lavenham for a guided walk around one of the finest surviving medieval wool villages in England with coffee, introductory talk and tour at the Guildhall of Corpus Christi. After lunch (not included) we travel to Sutton Hoo to visit the site of the greatest British archaeology discovery of the 20th century. Just before WW11 the famous ship burial was unearthed and in the visitor centre you will see impressive displays and interpretations of the many finds. You will walk around the ancient burial mounds and discover the incredible story of the ship burial of an Anglo-Saxon king and his treasured possessions. Enjoy the award-winning exhibition, the full-size reconstruction of the burial chamber, stunning replica treasures and original finds from one of the mounds, including a prince’s sword. This was a good, full weekend. Very interesting and a lot was fitted in but it was not rushed and ran very smoothly. This is the third weekend we have booked with you and we have had the very knowledgeable Mike Stone as our guide on each and have to say that he has looked after us very well.
