Oxford & the Pre-Raphaelites
See Morris & Co art & designs in Oxford's colleges accompanied by Dr Anne Anderson (June & July) or Alastair Lack (September & October)Special Event highlights: Pre-Raphaelite walking tour of Oxford Cream tea and a visit to the Morris Room at Exeter College Thomas Coombe Collection at the Ashmolean Holman Hunt's 'Light of the World' and William Butterfield's college chapel at Keble Burne-Jones' 'Days of Creation' window at Manchester College As a student at Exeter College, William Morris was exposed to the poetry, art and architecture that came to have a huge influence on his future work. This special tour explores the life and work of William Morris in Oxford, with his links to the Pre-Raphaelites and his legacy in the form of the Arts & Crafts movement with Dr Anne Anderson & Dr Scott Anderson or Alastair Lack. You will see 19th century work by the brothers-in-art and Morris' company with accompanied visits to the Ashmolean Museum to see the Combe Collection and Christ Church with stained glass windows by the Morris Firm. Also included are visits to Exeter Collage to view the Morris Room, Keble College to see Holman Hunt's masterpiece, "The Light of the World", the Oxford Museum, and the pretty churches of Middleton Cheney and Bloxham. Please note: This tour involves a considerable amount of walking and is therefore not suitable for people with walking difficulties.

Day 1
Introductory lecture by Pre-Raphaelites expert, Dr Anne Anderson “Brothers in Art: Rossetti, Burne-Jones and Morris”(June & July) or Alastair Lack (September & October), followed by a 3-course dinner with wine.
Day 2
Morning visit to the Ashmolean Museum to see the Thomas Coombe collection, which includes outstanding Pre-Raphaelite works; Millais’ "Return of the Dove to the Ark", Hunt’s "A Converted British Family Sheltering a Christian Missionary from the Druids" and Charles Allston Collins’"Convent Thoughts", which form a Victorian triptych in the manner of a 15th century Renaissance altarpiece. After lunch (not included) there is a walking tour of Oxford, taking in Christ Church, which has four outstanding stained glass windows by Morris’ “Firm”, originally founded as Morris, Marshall, Faulkner and Co. in 1861. Onto Exeter College, where William Morris befriended Edward Burne-Jones. Cream Tea will be taken at Exeter College, where you will view the chapel and the Morris Room, where his spectacles are one of the items on display. Evening talk by Dr Anne Anderson "Holman Hunt and the Light of the World" (June & July) or Alastair Lack (September & October). Dinner in the hotel restaurant.
Day 3
Morning visit to Keble College to see Holman Hunt’s masterpiece "The Light of the World" and the chapel by William Butterfield, we also visit the Oxford Museum inspired by John Ruskin’s "The Stones of Venice" and Manchester College, to see the beautiful stained glass windows by Burne-Jones, the "Days of Creation". After lunch (not included) in Oxford, an afternoon trip to the parish churches of Middleton Cheney and Bloxham, which both house very good Morris & Co. windows. Return to the hotel at approximately 5pm. Please note: On the September date there will be an additional visit to St Edmunds Church with Alastair Lack and on the October date an additional visit to the Oxford Union shall be included with Alastair Lack.
