Day one

Fly from London Gatwick to Tallinn via Riga. On arrival transfer to hotel in Tallinn for check in for a three night stay. The rest of the evening is at leisure.

Day two

Morning guided walking tour on Tallinn with the afternoon free for your own exploration. Estonia’s capital, Tallinn is a city of the rise. A delightful mix of the medieval and the modern, the old town is World Heritage-designated – a warren of cobbled streets overlooked by 14th century churches and beautiful buildings. At the same time new and exciting galleries of local artists, boutiques, bars and restaurants are flourishing within the old city walls sitting side by side with traditional artisans. This is the perfect city to stroll the streets and soak up the ambiance – you’ll also have plenty of excellent options for eating out in the evenings.

Day three

Full day tour to Lahemaa National Park, the fishing villages of Altja and Käsmu and Jägala Waterfall. Lahemaa, Estonia’s first national park, established in 1971, and still its largest, gives a beautiful overview of the landscapes of the country. It is an extremely important conservation area within Europe, being home to many large mammals including moose, boar, brown bears and lynxes. Altja and Käsmu are beautiful traditional coastal villages that are located within Lahemaa whilst the Jägala Waterfall sits on the lower course of the Jägala River, just 4kms from its mouth at the Gulf of Finland.

Day four

Transfer by coach from Tallinn to Riga with a visit en route to Pärnu. The resort town of Pärnu huddles in an inlet of the Gulf of Riga boasting beautiful beaches, lush green spaces and a historical gem of a town centre – this is Estonia’s most popular summer destination. The town also has some excellent museums and is also known as a health resort throughout Eastern Europe, where both old Soviet-style and glamorous, modern spas abound.

Day five

Morning guided walking tour of Riga with the afternoon free for your own exploration. Riga, capital of Latvia, is in the middle of a renaissance, the restoration of its many magnificent old buildings and fairytale skyline of turrets and steeples making it one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. The largest of the three Baltic cities and a wonderfully vibrant place, Riga is a fascinating fusion of old and new and is particularly known for having the largest concentration of Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) architecture in the world. Riga’s population is roughly 50% Latvian and 50% Russian, the cultures mixing harmoniously to make a cosmopolitan and delightful city.

Day six

Transfer by coach from Riga to Vilnius with a visit en route to Rundãle Palace. Built for the Dukes of Courland as a summer retreat, Rundãle Palace is a magnificent vision of opulent Baroque and Rococo. Designed by Italian architect Franceso Bartholomeo Rastrelli, who, as the Russian court architect, also designed the Winter Palace in Saint Petersburg, the palace was built in the 17th century.

Day seven

Morning guided walking tour of Vilnius with an afternoon visit to Trakai. Lithuania’s capital Vilnius is home to Europe’s largest Baroque old town – full of decadent churches, magnificent facades, narrow streets and intimate squares, this is picture-perfect city architecture. An enchanting place, Vilnius also has a hint of the Bohemian freethinker about it and has also seen a huge Jewish influence which led to it being the scene of some of the worst atrocities of the Soviet era, something that you’ll see remembered everywhere. The historic city and lake resort of Trakai is surrounded by water, sitting on five lakes. The city’s lovely island castle contains a fascinating history museum.

Day eight

Transfer to Vilnius airport for return flight to London Gatwick via Riga.

Brilliant tour. Very good guides throughout. Exceptional value for money. Would that much more expensive travel companies (eg The Traveller) could provide such quality!
