This delightful tour visits one of France’s most distinctive and beautiful areas, the mountainous Savoie region together with its atmospheric second city, Lyon, famed for its cuisine.Our Savoie by rail tour, travelling by Eurostar and TGV, also includes the highlights of the delightful town of Chambéry, Annecy and its stunning lake, the charming mountain town of Grenoble, and historic Lyon. We also visit the charming lakeside spa town of Aix-les-Bains and the nearby Benedictine Monastery, the Abbaye d'Hautecombe. For 2012, in response to comments from several customers, we have continued to offer an option on some specified dates to stay for 6 nights/7 days, with a full free day in the middle of the itinerary to explore or relax at your own leisure.

PLEASE NOTE: As with most trains, passengers are responsible for carrying baggage onto and off the train. Baggage can be stored on overhead shelves or at the entrance to the carriages.Trollies are available at St Pancras and Lille, but bags do need to be carried on to the platform.Travel Editions recommends a new luggage delivery service called Carry My Luggage, where your suitcase can be picked up from your home before departure and delivered straight to your hotel; therefore removing the worry about carrying your cases onto and off the trains. PLEASE NOTE 2: Eurostar have changed their upgraded service from September 2010 from "Leisure Select" to a new service that they are branding as "Standard Premier." This service includes the upgraded seating on the train but now includes only a cold, light meal and a drink.

This tour is based at the beautiful Chateau des Comtes de Challes, located in the pretty village of Challes-les-Eaux about 6km from Chambéry. Dating from the 15th century this atmospheric hotel was converted from a fortified house and offers a very high level of comfort and service. Facilities at this friendly, family-owned hotel include restaurant, bar, delightful grounds, outdoor pool and charming, well-appointed rooms with private bath/shower, TV, telephone and minibar. It even has its own private chapel!

Hotel rooms and evening meals were very good; breakfast eventually got sorted out. Places visited were beautiful; some deserve a return visit, with more time to explore. Beautiful area and enjoyable holiday.
