Southern Provence and the Cote dAzur by rail

  • Meals other than those stated
  • Items of a personal nature such as drinks, laundry, telephone calls.
  • Porterage and gratuities.

Day one

Travel by rail on Eurostar from St Pancras or Ebbsfleet to Lille and onwards to Marseille by TGV. On arrival transfer by coach under tour manager's direction to the hotel for check-in for a six night stay on bed and breakfast basis.

Day two

Full day tour to Bandol, Cassis and the Calanques. The Mediterranean resort of Bandol is best known for its red wine, which has been produced here since 600BC. Unusually, it is often served cold. Cassis has managed to retain its small fishing village charms and has remained largely unaltered since it attracted painters such as Signac and Derain in the early 20th century. Along the coastline between Marseille and Cassis, the sea has pummelled the limestone cliffs into a series of deep, dramatic inlets – the Calanques.

Day three

Full day tour to Hyères and Toulon. The oldest resort on the French Riviera, the town of Hyères is gathered around the Castle of Saint Bernard, which sits on a hilltop four kilometres from the sea. The palm-tree-and-Belle-Époque-building-lined streets once hosted luminaires such as Robert Louis Stevenson, Edith Wharton and Queen Victoria. Toulon is France’s second-largest naval port thanks to its fine natural harbour with a daily produce market on Cours Lafayette.

Day four

Full day to relax and explore Sanary-sur-Mer at your leisure. Sanary has a coastline of small beaches and a bustling harbour replete with medieval tower. It is the perfect place to stroll, enjoy the many harbourside cafes, bars and restaurants or simply relax.

Day five

Full day tour to Aix-en-Provence. The city of Aix-en-Provence has a medieval centre a knot of grand architecture and atmospheric lanes, peppered with squares. Once home to artist Paul Cézanne, you will find his studio preserved exactly as he left it on his death in 1906. There are many lovely cafes to sit in and watch the world go by along the Cours Mirabeau.

Day six

Full day tour to Saint-Tropez and Bormes-les- Mimosas. Saint-Tropez has long been the glamorous playground for the rich and famous, having started out as a Bohemian hangout in the early 20th century for artists such as Matisse, Dufy, Signac and Bonnard – you can see some of their art in the Musée de l‘Annonciade. Despite its popularity with tourists, Saint-Tropez has managed to maintain its Mediterranean charms. The medieval hill village of Bormes has plummeting pedestrianised streets that lead to cafés and coastal views. At the foot of the Massif des Maures, Bormes is full of old buildings and is known for its abundance of flowers.

Day seven

Transfer back to Marseille station to catch the return TGV to Paris. At Paris, board the return Eurostar service to Ebbsfleet and St Pancras.

NB: Exact order may vary according to local conditions and tour manager's discretion.

This was a "proper" holiday! Sanary is such a lovely relaxing place. The hotel was very pleasant and I very much appreciated being given such an excellent room with huge terrace even as a single person. I loved the trips and Norman was first class and very well informed. I shall definitely travel with you again and have already recommended Travel Editions to friends.

Good value for money. Delightful resort & friendly hotel though the indoor pool is dangerous. The free day in Sanary makes all the difference. Good driver & coach too apart from nasty buzz on loudspeaker. Keep up the good work.
