The combination of 4 x 4 jeeps and gentle walks gives you the opportunity to see an array of Crete's wonderful, contrasting and often hidden scenery - verdant footpaths, high rugged mountains, dramatic wild gorges, stunning seascapes and timeless picturesque villages. Our base for the week is the friendly Sunny Bay Hotel situated on Kissamos' small promenande, right next to the sea, and our hosts once again are Angela and Stelios Milonakis who look after all aspects of this tour including leading the walks, driving the jeeps and providing delicious Cretan cuisine in their local taverna.
All meals are included in the price of the holiday with the exception of the free day when lunch and dinner are not included. Breakfast is taken every morning at your hotel and dinner will be at a local restaurant every evening with the exception of one evening when dinner will be taken at a taverna in the atmospheric Venetian harbour town of Chania. Lunches will be at village tavernas each day. Although the walks are gentle, walking boots are considered essential for the type of terrain we will encounter.

Day 2: Our tour begins along the narrow 'finger' of the Gramvousa peninsula with our 4 x 4 transportation. At the end of our drive a short walk takes us down to the tropical lagoon of Balos bay, where there will be time to swim in its translucent turquoise waters before we head inland for an informative and historical visit to the ancient village of Polyrinnia, once a fortified stronghold of the region and now a sleepy traditional Cretan Village. After a delicious lunch in a local taverna we will walk above the village to its ancient archaeological site where we find spectacular panoramic views over the bay of Kissamos and, towering in the distance, the White Mountains.
Day 3: Today we head into the hills by jeep to explore hinterland tracks that take us high up amongst the mountains before descending to the sea on the south coast. Spectacular scenery abounds in all directions, at one point we will be able to sight the north, the west and the southern coastlines.
Day 4: We will explore again by jeep today and head to the other 'finger' of Kissamos bay, the Rodopou Peninsula that reaches far into the Cretan Sea to the east of Kissamos. The peninsular is 18 km long and 5 km wide. At the southern end, where the few tiny villages can be found, access is easy but the rest of the peninsula, mostly inhabited only by shepherds, has kept its original wildness and seclusion so 4 x 4 travel is essential. Our day will include a visit to the beautiful monastery of Gonia and will culminate with a BBQ lunch at a secluded cove where there will again be an opportunity to swim. This evening we will discover the delights of the Venetian harbour of Chania where we will enjoy dinner in an atmospheric taverna.
Day 5: Today is free for you to do as you wish and there are lots of possibilities in the area. The 16km Samaria Gorge, the beautiful beaches of Falassarna or, after your visit for dinner the evening before, you may wish to return to Chania's wonderful Venetian harbour and old town.
Day 6: Our day is spent on foot today amongst the peace and tranquillity of the picturesque and gentle Deliana Gorge, resplendent with flora and fauna. Our walk finishes at an ancient church before a delicious lunch at a local taverna.
Day 7: Sirikari to Polyrinnia. Our walk begins high with panoramic views over the bay of Kissamos. We will pass through the peaceful gorge of Sirikari. There is time for a welcome rest stop at a beautiful old Venetian stone bridge, under the shade of Platanos (Plane) trees, before we start our ascent to Polyrinnia where we will enjoy lunch in a local taverna before returning to Kissamos.
Day 8: Transfer to Chania airport for return flight to the UK.
NB: Exact order of itinerary may vary according to local conditions and tour manager's discretion.

We had a lovely time, and felt we had experienced the real Crete, thanks to Stelios and Angela. They both went out of their way to ensure everyone got the most out of their stay, and were so friendly and hospitable.
This is one of the most entertaining holidays we have been on.

Lovely trip with lovely tour guides... who were always helpful, kind and interesting - and fun! The carefully planned days out gave me a fascinating insight into Cretan life, past and present... Weather could have been better but realise you can't control that!
