Day one

Fly to Washington and transfer to Richmond, Virginia for a one-night stay.

Day two

Begin the journey south this morning, travelling first through North, then South Carolina, to the city of Charleston for an overnight stay.

Day three

Head past beach towns and plantation houses, into Charleston - the epitome of southern elegance. Join the optional city tour and discover the waterfront park and the historic district, before we journey south to Savannah for a two-night stay.

Day four

Explore Savannah, with its historic quarter of antebellum mansions, shaded squares and cotton warehouses, and its associations with the slave trade and the civil war. The optional guided city tour will introduce you to the city's history, after which you can lose yourself amongst the dogwood and azalea-lined streets.

Day five

Travel north today, to the old town of Winston-Salem, for a one night stay.

Day six

Spend a day on our included tour into the Blue Ridge mountains. Catch your breath on the Blue Ridge Parkway - a refuge for deer and other wildlife - and visit historic Charlottesville, one-time home of US Presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe, with its magnolia-lined streets. Continue to Richmond for two nights.

Day seven

Step back in time on today's optional excursion to the living museum that is Colonial Williamsburg, northernmost point of Virginia's 'Historic Triangle'. Actors in period costume recreate the lives of the early settlers, giving an insight into what life was like in the pioneering days of the 18th Century.

Today we cross the Potomac river to Washington DC where the White House, Lincoln Memorial, the Capitol and the government buildings on 'the Hill', are amongst the most memorable sights.
