Day one

Fly to Malta. On arrival a coach will take you to your choice of hotel in St Julian’s where you will stay on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis. The four star hotel Vivaldi is located on a stretch of coastline. Alternatively you can upgrade to the four star superior Marina hotel at the Corinthia beach resort, on the edge of St George’s Bay overlooking the water.

Day two

Today you will have a tour of the 16th century city of Valletta, founded by the Knights of St John, which has changed little since it was built. St John’s cathedral is remarkable, with overwhelming decoration, as is the Grand Masters’ Palace which reflects the status of the Knights of St John. You will visit the Malta Experience which tells the story of the island using the latest technology. In the afternoon you may want to visit the archaeological museum, the Grand Masters’ Palace or the National War museum at Fort St Elmo which houses the replica of the George Cross.

Day three

You will visit the island of Gozo and its capital, Victoria, a medieval town with twisting streets and alleyways with almost completely intact battlements. The coastline is dramatic. Sheer cliffs plunge into deep blue waters: especially at Dwerja where geology and the sea have together formed a huge natural arch in the cliffs known as the Azure Window, with a cliff bound lagoon behind. You also visit the largest and best preserved of the island’s prehistoric temple sites, Ggantija, which predates the Pyramids and Stonehenge.

Day four

Today you will have a free day to explore as you wish. A walk around St Julian’s perhaps, with its quayside lined by fish restaurants. We also recommend a visit to the hypogeum, a series of underground burial chambers and temple dating from 3,500BC. It is preserved and boasts sophisticated building techniques, perspective and sound resonance. Visits, costing approximately €20, need to be reserved at least a month in advance and tickets can be booked at www.heritagemalta.org.

Day five

After breakfast you will take the short drive to ancient Mdina, formerly Malta’s capital. With the Baroque dome of the cathedral puncturing the skyline, and hosts of yellow limestone patrician townhouses. During your tour you will see St Paul’s catacombs, more than 1,000 fourth century Christian burial chambers, as well as a Roman villa with a mosaic floor. You will also visit the decorated church of Mosta, which has the third largest dome in the world.

Day six

Today is a free day to explore as you wish.

Day seven

After breakfast you will visit the Neolithic temples at Tarxien, which date between 3000 and 1800BC and offer important evidence of the cultures that inhabited Malta. You will also have a short walking tour of Vittoriosa and then visit the fishing village of Marsaxlokk.

Day eight

Transfer to the airport for the return flight.
Hotel Vivaldi - four star

Located on a stretch of coastline with one of Malta’s few sandy beaches 400 metres away. It well deserves its rating being a member of the Golden Tulip group, one of the most prestigious hotel chains in Europe. It has an extensive lobby; restaurant with sea views, offering a full international buffet; a gymnasium and swimming pool. All rooms are fully air-conditioned with en suite facilities, minibar and hairdryer.

Marina hotel - four star

At the Corinthia beach resort, St Julian’s, this hotel nestles at the edge of the Bay of St George. The hotel forms part of the luxurious Corinthia beach resort so guests are able to enjoy the facilities of the neighbouring five star sister hotel. All the rooms have a relaxed Mediterranean ambience with their elegant pastel colours and smart tiled floors – all are fully air-conditioned with minibar and safe plus all the facilities you would expect in a hotel of this quality. You can enjoy use of no less than five swimming pools, spa and sauna facilities (at additional charge) plus an exclusive private rocky beach, and unwind after a hard day’s sightseeing with a refreshing drink in one of the hotel’s many bars. The hotel’s restaurant serves a selected menu of international flavours or you may prefer to dine on the hotel’s terrace overlooking the bay whilst the sun goes down.

Please note: Where hotels feature an outdoor swimming pool, this will be open summer months, weather permitting.

We have just returned from the Malta trip, and once again would like to say how very pleased we were. The holiday, excursions, organisation, hotel and food were all excellent, as was our guide Margaret, and our courier Peter.
