Day one

Fly to Zurich and transfer to the medieval town of Brig, located in the Rhône valley. We stay four nights at the traditional family run three star Hotel Victoria or four star Hotel Alex, in nearby Naters.

Day two

Our first day trip takes us to the Mattertal valley. Climbing upwards, meadows covered with wild flowers and studded with shepherds’ huts give way to dense forests, crowned by snow capped mountains. We pass mountain streams and waterfalls before arriving at Zermatt, nestling at the foot of the Matterhorn.

Day three

You travel through the Simplon tunnel to Italy, and Stresa, where you will have free time to wander the cobbled streets before boarding your private launch over the waters of Lake Maggiore taking in the sights of the Borromean Islands. You head back to the opposite shore of the lake in Verbania. Returning to Switzerland and Locarno, board the Centovalli railway to Domodossola, where a coach meets you for the final part of your journey.

Day four

Today we travel to Montreux on Lake Geneva where you have a full day at leisure. You could take a cruise on one of the many Belle Epoque style paddle-steamers plying the lake. Or take the cog-wheel railway to the peak of Rochers de Naye. Down by the lakeshore, the 13th century Chateau de Chillon stands just outside the town. Or simply stroll along the lakeside promenade, with the view of snow-capped mountains of the Haute-Savoie on the opposite bank. For those who like a walk, there are plenty of footpaths close to Brig. A couple of stops down the railway a cable-car and gondola ride whisks you up to 8,684 feet to the Bettmerhorn from where there’s a panorama over the Aletsch glacier, Europe’s longest and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Day five

Today we take the Glacier Express - one of the most spectacular railway journeys in the world. It winds its way through the scenery on its four hour 120 km journey. Passing mountain ranges, waterfalls, forest-covered hillsides and ravines with torrential rivers, the railway seems to float on high viaducts and punch its way through mountain tunnels. The highest point on your journey is the Oberalp Pass at 6,700 feet, well above the tree-line. After lunch on board (payable locally), we arrive in Chur, from where our coach takes us up to Klosters, the royal family’s favourite ski resort. The village is a huddle of typical dark-wood chalets, surrounded by invigorating alpine peaks. Our hotel for three nights, on half-board, is the four star Silvretta Park hotel.

Day six

While in Klosters you have free access via all the nearby cable cars and chair lifts to the surrounding peaks - a wonderland of stunning alpine views linked by spectacular walks. The homely chalet-restaurants serve local specialities on their sunlit terraces.

Day seven

Today, we have a contrasting day of scenery and Swiss engineering, taking the famous Bernina Express to Tirano, just over the Italian border. The train twists upwards in a sequence loops, tunnels and 196 bridges. You travel past the chic resort of St Moritz, to the Ospizio Bernina at 7,400 feet, surrounded by vistas over snow clad peaks and ice cold glacial lakes. Next, we wind our way down through pastures to Tirano where you have some free time before boarding our coach back to Klosters. The Bernina Express railway and its surrounding countryside is a UNESCO Heritage site and acknowledged as one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world.

Day eight

At the end of the tour, you’ll be transferred to Zurich airport for your flight home.

There were excellent hotels, good coaches and drivers. I would especially like to praise your tour guide Paula who looked after us so well giving clear instructions and directions in a very pleasant manner and was also a mine of information.
