Day one

Board an early afternoon Eurostar service from London St. Pancras International (exact time will be given on travel documents) arriving in Brussels one hour 51 minutes later. A coach takes us over the German border to the cathedral city of Aachen staying one night with dinner at the three star, centrally located, Ibis.

Day two

In the morning we have some time in Aachen during which you see the cathedral, parts of which date from the eighth century. Built with huge amounts of fine marble it contains many medieval relics including a throne on which more than thirty princes were crowned King of Germania, plus a shrine containing the remains of Charlemagne. (Please note services on Saturdays and Sundays may restrict access and it may not be possible to see inside). Then you enter the Rhine gorge weaving through villages, dominated by half-ruined castles along the hillsides. You stay two nights at the Mercure Bensheim in Bensheim, in parts medieval, with a variety of bars, restaurants and medieval buildings.

Day three

This morning we have a tour of nearby Heidelberg. Nestling by the river Neckar, in a valley dominated by its castle, high on a wooded hillside. Visited, amongst many others, by the artist Turner who captured its splendours for eternity.

Day four

This morning you take the drive south visiting Baden Baden, a spa town since Roman times and frequented by Europe’s aristocracy during the 19th century. Then you enter the Black Forest with its rugged valleys full of white-water rivers and waterfalls, rolling hillsides covered with huge, densely packed pine trees. You visit the village of Sasbachwalden full of chalet-style houses, with their gentle sloping roofs, large verandas and balconies crammed with flowers. Crossing into France, you stay three nights in Strasbourg at the three star Hotel Mercure situated in the historic old city. Dinner is included on the first evening only.

Day five

France’s region of Alsace has managed to preserve the best of its past, with half timbered villages throughout the rolling countryside. The capital is Strasbourg, famous for its 16th century old town. This morning, you will have a walking tour of the city, the 11th century cathedra and several museums, one of which includes works by Rodin.

Day six

Just south of Strasbourg lies a wine route of medieval villages, cobbled streets and Renaissance chateaux. You take a scenic drive and a tasting of some of Alsace’s fine wines, soon arriving in Colmar, the best-preserved city in eastern France. Originally the centre of the wine trade, it is a maze of former merchants houses and antique shops, plus a monastery. The former wine exchange and the cathedral quarter is surrounded by pastel coloured half timbered houses, displaying the intricate wrought-iron hanging signs so typical of this area of Europe.

Day seven

Take the TGV to Paris, connecting with the Eurostar service to London St. Pancras International. In order to facilitate the easy changing of trains, your tour manager will accompany you throughout.
