Day one

Flight to Madrid. On arrival, a coach will take you to Salamanca, staying two nights at the three star superior Hotel San Polo, centrally located on the edge of the old town near the cathedrals.

Day two

Salamanca is one of Spain’s most beautiful cities, built almost entirely with local sandstone and dominated by its two cathedrals and university - the oldest in Spain, founded in 1215. Today you have a guided tour with the remainder of the day free.

Day three

Today you drive to Segovia, capital of Castille and home to a preserved Roman aqueduct. There are Renaissance paintings in the cathedral but the Alcazar, or castle, dominates this old city. You soon arrive in Madrid and your hotel for four nights half-board is the four star Novotel. This hotel is located approximately three miles from the centre of Madrid, set in its own gardens complete with swimming pool and terrace. On certain dates, you stay at the four star Catalonia Gran Via, situated in the centre of Madrid, on a bed and breakfast basis, with dinner on one night.

Day four

This morning you have a sightseeing tour, during which you will see the Plaza Mayor, the vast square in the heart of old Madrid, the Prado museum, housing one of the world’s finest art collections with works by Goya and Velazquez, the Royal Palace, the Plaza De Espana, home to the Don Quixote, and the Puerta del Sol. The afternoon is free.

Day five

In the morning you visit Aranjuez and the former summer palace of the Spanish royal family, famous for its gardens created in French and Flemish-style with neat hedges, lakes, ornate fountains and fine sculpture. The palace features antiques, fabrics and furniture, together with works of art, glassware and porcelain. This evening you take the short drive to Chinchon, a provincial village full of the atmosphere of rural Spain and famous for its town square. You have a little time to wander, before visiting a restaurant, converted from a former olive mill, where you will be served specialities of the region.

Day six

Today we visit the city of Toledo, rich in history, buildings and art. It takes its influences from Jewish, Christian and Moorish civilisations and is famous for its Alcazar Palace, cathedral, richly adorned with treasures plundered from the New World, and a wealth of other buildings, including El Greco’s house.

Day seven

The coach will take you to Madrid airport for your return flight.

The cities we visited were fascinating and we felt there was a good balance between organised walks and talks, and free time to do our own thing.

The tour was well organised and ran like clockwork.
