Loire valley and Monet's garden

The Loire Valley, is one of France’s most beautiful regions. It is a traditional land of sleepy towns full of narrow streets and old-fashioned shops and markets, imposing cathedrals and châteaux crammed with furniture and antiques. Combine this with the house and garden of Claude Monet.

Day one

Travel by Eurostar from London St Pancras International (exact time of travel will be indicated on travel documents, arriving at Paris Gard du Nord 2hrs 15 mins later). A coach will take you to Vernon near Claude Monet’s house and garden, where you stay half board at the three star Hotel Normandy.

Day two

Today you visit Monet’s house and garden. In the Japanese inspired water garden, shaded by a great willow tree and surrounded by bamboo trees, rhododendrons and azaleas is the lily pond, where the Nympheas or ‘Water Lilies’ were painted. Your journey continues to Chartres, with its cathedral and intricate 13th-century stained glass. Eventually you arrive in the city of Tours, where you will be staying for three nights bed and breakfast at either the Artist hotel, the Kyriad hotel, the Alliance hotel or the Mercure hotel, all centrally located on the edge of the old town.

Day three

After breakfast you make your way down the Loire valley to the château of Villandry, famous for its gardens, consisting largely of vegetables. Then it’s on to Chinon, medieval in character with winding streets, pointed roofs, half-timbered houses and dominated by the large castle, where Joan of Arc first met the Dauphin prior to crowning him King of France in Reims cathedral.

Day four

This morning you visit Amboise, a little town nestling on the banks of the river where a royal castle sits, as does Leonardo da Vinci’s house, which has been restored with many models of his inventions on display. You then visit Chenonceau, home of Mary Queen of Scots and probably the most stately of the Loire châteaux, hovering on the waters of the River Cher, before returning to your hotel. This evening you dine in a restaurant.

Day five

After breakfast you depart Tours for a morning’s drive to visit the château of Fontainebleau, just south of Paris, where Napoleon departed to his exile on the island of Elba. It is decorated with intricate frescoes and parquet floors inlaid with exotic woods. Most impressive is the vast display of furniture and the formally designed, extensive grounds. This evening you stay and dine at the nearby four star hotel Mercure.

Day six

Today you drive to the railway station, at the appropriate time, to return home.

A friend and I recently went on your Loire Valley trip and I am writing to say how much we, and all our fellow travellers, enjoyed it. The whole trip ran smoothly, hotels were excellent and our courier, Joanne, was a joy. Nothing was too much trouble, she gave us just the right amount of information and kept us entertained. I would thouroughly recommend this tirp to my friends

We have just been on your Loire Valley 6 day trip and felt we must write to say how impressed we were by your rep. She was an informative, entertaining & extremely well-organised guide, having conscientiously researched both history and present amenities to make our holiday more pleasurable.
