Day two

After breakfast you will have a guided walking tour of Florence. The sights are legendary and you will see the cathedral, the baptistry - the oldest building in the city, and the Ponte Vecchio, the superb bridge over the River Arno. During the afternoon, you have a reserved entrance to the Uffizi gallery, one of the finest in the world, containing masterpieces by Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Titian, Rembrandt and Van Dyck.

Day three

After breakfast you will take the short drive to Lucca, birthplace of Puccini. You continue to nearby Pisa with its bizarre leaning tower. It is set in a complex that includes a cathedral and baptistry.

Day four

Today you will be free to explore Florence and the Accademia gallery, home to Michelangelo’s David. Dominating the skyline is the cathedral or the Duomo, built from white, green and pink marble, and possessing a remarkable interior with frescoes and an intricate marble pavement. Florence has cosy restaurants and street cafés – the very essence of Italy and its Mediterranean lifestyle. At the end of the day you drive to one of our selected four star rated hotels in Tuscany for the next four nights on half board.

Day five

Today you will explore the undulating hillsides of Tuscany, studded with cypress trees and immortalised by Renaissance paintings. You will visit one of Italy’s most beautiful villages, San Gimignano, with its skyline of 13th-century towers, evoking magical images of medieval Tuscany. Volterra, a typical Tuscan town, dramatically situated on a hill, commands views of the countryside and is surrounded by stone ramparts. The small historic centre is a maze of narrow cobbled streets surrounded by the high buildings typical of the Mediterranean. It also has one of the best archaeological museums in Italy.

Day six

After breakfast you will visit Siena, one of the best preserved medieval cities in the world, with its main square, the Campo. The cathedral is one of Italy’s greatest. Built from black and white marble, it has some of the most intricate carvings, including some by Michelangelo. You have a guided tour and then during the afternoon you have free time at leisure.

Day seven

The two hotels were of high quality, friendly and perfectly situated. The two tour guides managed very successfully to introduce us to their home towns with a well judged combination of local knowledge, history and anecdotes.
