Day One
Leaving the local area in the early morning, we head to the ancient city of Durham. Visit the iconic cathedral and castle to marvel at one of the greatest surviving examples of Normanesque architecture, or browse the stylish boutiques and quirky craft shops, before we continue to our hotel for dinner.
Day Two
Today we visit the delightful tidal island of Lindisfarne, also known as 'Holy Island' due to its ancient religious heritage. Explore this designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, visit the ancient Priory ruin and picturesque 16th-century castle, and find out about island life at the Lindisfarne Centre (all entry fees payable locally). We'll also stop at the coastal village of Bamburgh, dominated by a great sandstone castle overlooking the Farne Islands, before returning to our hotel in time for dinner.
Day Three
Discover the magnificent Alnwick Garden today. Just a few minutes walk from the medieval castle - the second largest inhabited fortress in England - the garden is a real jewel. From the pergola-covered paths of the rose garden to the Serpent Garden's eight water sculptures, and from one of the world's largest tree houses to the famous Grand Cascade with its tumbling waterfalls, there is something for everyone to enjoy. In the mid-afternoon we'll begin our journey home, arriving back in the local area by early to mid evening.
